COURSE DESCRIPTION
|
| |
In a world besieged by daily crises, many people turn to their local church or faith community for nourishment and guidance. Indeed, research has found that the majority of Americans prefer a mental health professional who is able to integrate spiritual values into the counseling process (AAPC Survey, 2000). Pastoral counseling meets this need by providing a relationship between a religiously-affiliated counselor and an individual, couple, or family seeking assistance to cope with life.
This CE course defines the functions of pastoral counseling, presents the historical development of pastoral counseling, explores different types of pastoral counseling, and explains issues involved in merging a faith tradition with therapeutic psychology. The Compass Therapy approach and Self Compass® growth tool are combined with ten counseling techniques that show pastoral counseling in action. The American Association of Pastoral Counselors (AAPC) Code of Ethics in pastoral counseling is provided, as well as a bibliography and online resources.
The course is designed to enhance the pastoral counseling skill sets of individuals who are involved in pastoral counseling, pastoral ministry, marriage and family therapy, psychotherapy, counseling, spiritual direction, social work, and nursing.
